The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich in Basel hosts international research groups with expertise in experimental biology, computational sciences, biotechnology, biophysics, and microtechnology. The D-BSSE has a proprietary cleanroom facility (80 m2) for the production and processing of chip-based microtechnological, microfluidic and microelectronic systems that are developed for biomedical applications. Moreover, there will be a significantly larger cleanroom facility (400 m2) opened in 2022 in a new building at the Schällemätteli in the heart of Basel, which will be a microtechnology hub for the greater Basel area.

In order to support the research groups in microtechnological processes we look for a highly motivated and enthusiastic cleanroom engineer or cleanroom technician (100%) with expertise in microtechnological fabrication, who will want to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment in Basel, Switzerland.

We offer a permanent contract, the position is immediately available, a starting date can be arranged for in mutual agreement.

We offer an interesting and challenging environment with highly motivated colleagues. You will work in a state-of-the-art cleanroom facility (class 100/10000; ISO 5/7) with microfabrication tools for up to 200 mm wafer size, which also includes equipment for chip bonding and packaging. You can contribute your know-how and experience to develop novel and improve existing fabrication processes and will have specific training opportunities for continuous learning.

Job description

Your tasks include the development, execution and supervision of fabrication processes for microtechnological/microfluidic devices, specifically the development and implementation of processing methods for glass, silicon and polymer micromachining. Moreover, activities also encompass the microtechnological post-processing of microelectronics wafers and CMOS-wafers, as well as sorting and packaging of fully processed devices, including dicing, wirebonding, die-bonding and biocompatible chip-packaging. To ensure high and constant processing quality, professional maintenance and servicing of the cleanroom infrastructure is also a necessity.

Your profile

n

n

You have an education as cleanroom technician or cleanroom engineer, you enjoy working in a challenging international environment and in close contact to researchers. You are used to work independently and you are experienced in microtechnological cleanroom work in terms of technical aspects, requirements and procedures. You have experience with maintenance and error analysis of cleanroom equipment. Moreover, you are experienced in the development and fabrication of microsystems or microfluidic systems including:

  • planar micropatterning procedures, mostly lithography (with positive resists and SU-8)
  • etching and layer-deposition processes and equipment (wet bench, sputter beam, ion beam, RIE and PECVD systems)
  • microstructuring of standard polymers, such as PDMS or SU-8

Ideally you also are familiar with methods and basic requirements of packaging (dicing, die-bonding, wirebonding). Experience with scanning electron microscopy is a plus.

A good oral and written command of English is indispensable, as you will work in an international environment, and as most of the collaborators will not speak German.
